The International Students' Committee has collaborated with different societies in the Sheffield Students' Union to bring you Refugees Week — a week of events aimed at raising awareness about the current Refugee crisis as well integrating refugees into the Sheffield community. ISC's Americas Representative, Taylor Harris, and Middle East Representative, Omar Saeed, have collaborated with the International Students' Officer, Santhana Gopalakrishnan, to raise funds for ASSIST Sheffield, which is a charity that challenges asylum destitution.
Free entry to all events but donations for ASSIST Sheffield are highly encouraged. Tickets for Movements on Wednesday start from £3, with all proceeds split between Conservation Club, ASSIST Sheffield and South Yorkshire Refugee Law and Justice. Throughout the week, there will be a donation drive at the Beach Huts in the Students' Union. We will be accepting clothing and monetary donations. There will also be a bake sale, where all proceeds are donated to ASSIST Sheffield.
Mon 16th April — we will be hosting a Refugees Welcome to Dinner Event in collaboration with the Wellbeing Cafe at Sheffield Students' Union. This is a great way to enjoy local, sustainable food, while getting to know refugees in our community.
Tues 17th April — join us for a panel discussion with a variety of esteemed speakers. This includes Majid Majid, Deputy Lord Mayor of Sheffield who fled Somalia when he was young, Majd Abu Shawish, a student from Palestine; Dr. Anny Huang, a doctor who has spent time working in refugee camps in Greece; and Otto Wolf, a representative from STAR (Student Action for Refugees). Come and listen to their stories and ask any questions that you might have!
Wed 18th April — Student Action for Refugees (STAR) have organised a funky night of dance and world music in collaboration with Yellow Arch Studios. Tickets start from just £3 on Party For The People with all proceeds from the night split between Conservation Club, ASSIST Sheffield and South Yorkshire Refugee Law and Justice, who form a range of vital support networks for Asylum Seekers and Refugees in Sheffield.
Thurs 19th April — we will be screening Miral, a film about an orphaned Palestinian girl who grows up in the wake of the Arab-Palestinian conflict, starring Freida Pinto (in collaboration with Film Unit). View the trailer here: youtube.com/watch?v=kRyFbrjo7_k
